Anyone who attended boarding school with Joanna Berryman wouldn’t be surprised to hear that she now creates beautiful spaces as a profession. “My walls at school were bedecked with dreamy Paolo Roversi campaigns, enamel cat hooks and pictures of River Phoenix,” laughs the 36-year-old, pouring through bags of samples at her HQ in Hampstead. “And I had an Aztec print duvet on my dormitory bed!”
A former fashion stylist, Berryman launched her interior design consultancy Matrushka in 2009 after “people kept asking me to create versions of my own home in theirs.” She continues to work on residential properties – “I see them as a museum of you; travel souvenirs and sentimental heirlooms are your jewels” – but recent projects have also included a 2000 square foot office on Cavendish Square and a furniture collection for HD Buttercup in LA.
What’s her favourite part of the job? “Collaboration… It’s impossible not to forge friendships with your clients because it’s such an intimate and sensitive process.”
