Magnus Pettersen

A concrete sellotape dispenser, an aluminium bedside table and a lighthouse-inspired table lamp… 32-year-old designer Magnus Pettersen makes “pieces with an industrial feel but softened for a domestic environment.”

Born in Sarpsborg, Norway and trained in London on the MA course in Industrial Design at Central Saint Martins, Pettersen’s unique approach is the product of this hybrid past. “My love of an industrial look comes from London,” he explains, “and there is a simplicity to my work, which relates to my Scandinavian heritage.”

His design philosophy is equally unfussy. “It doesn’t have to be too clever or innovating, as long as it’s been designed with care,” he continues. “If you follow those rules you have a good chance of designing something good. However, everyone gets it wrong sometimes, but you have to make a few mistakes along the way to keep growing.”

Does he believe in the perfect design? “No! If I did, nothing would ever be completed. You have to let go at some point.”

MY PIONEER HERO: Terence Conran
“He is such an inspiring figure within the design industry. His ethos is about creating long-lasting, simple and functional – yet beautiful – objects. He has always been business-minded, which is important and often a neglected factor when starting up.”
